giffgaff is an award winning mobile operator run by its users. We designed the very first product version which is now used by millions of users.

About giffgaff

giffgaff is a mobile phone service in the UK and differs from conventional operators. Its users can also participate in the company’s operations and receive a remuneration.

The challenge was to design a radically different mobile network brand and product for O2/Telefonica. I was part of the UX design team responsible for creating the concept and the beta launch. We knew the technology platform wouldn’t be ready for primetime, but needed to get enough users onto the network to test it.

The design process

In the beta phase, we decided to target an audience of young, tech-savvy, digitally-native people. We created LOTS of sketches for giffgaff’s pages, widgets, and flows. I also helped shape the very first version of the design language, the product's interaction model, the design guidelines for the unlogged version (main navigation, home, and offerings page), and the user's dashboard where customers can manage their giffgaff products.

Concept definition

We had very little media investment to demonstrate giffgaff’s ‘people powered’ proposition, at a time when it had no people to do so. However, time has proved the concept and giffgaff is recognised as a social pioneer with millions of users, and  an award winning product: Forrester Groundswell Award (2010), the Most Innovative Community Award at the Social CRM Customer Excellence Awards (2010), the Which? best telecom services provider award (2014), the best MVNO (mobile virtual network operator) in the Mobile Industry Awards (2015), and the uSwitch Network of the Year, for 3 consecutive years (2014-2017).

Once we had a good understanding of how the OS should look and feel, it was time to break the UI down into smaller design units. These smaller and reusable units dubbed “Building Blocks” came with design rules and guidelines to explain how to use them across the entire system.

Sergi can talk to business and marketing as easily as he can talk to the technical team. In both cases, he manages to push his views without being unreasonable.

What we accomplished

Being part of giffgaff's original design team was a great experience and I am proud of having contributed to the product's inception. I gained a lot of experience in the UK market, particularly working with brand agencies, acting as “bridge” with O2 and Telefónica. As a result we successfully launched a new mobile operator to market starting from nothing, and contributed to shape a product that is used everyday by millions of users in the UK.
